I don't know what the official explanation or solution is, but something similar happened on my Alpha (which has 6 rather large, rather full Mac volumes on it).

On the server, I deleted the hidden ICON file at the root of the offending Mac volume, then rebooted, and the correct icon came back. Don't know why. Didn't ask. Just accepted it.
