Every Mac Volume has an ICON file at it's root. The creation date will be
whenever the volume was created (or rebuilt?) but the Last Modified date
seems to always be 10/14/1996. It has zero K in the data fork but I assume
it contains the volume's icon in the resource fork. I don't have a Mac
handy to test this. You could try creating a new volume and if it has a
color icon, copy its ICON file to the volumes experiencing the problem.

Hopefully as we trim the contents, the colors will return, but I'm also
curious if anyone has an official explanation for this phenomenon, or if
they've seen it before.
