Next message: Thomas Kase: "Re: [WinMac] Ethernet for old LaserJet?"
Hello all,
On my home-office network, on the Mac side we have "switched."
We also have one Windows XP Pro computer, which is used only
occasionally to test our database solutions cross-platform.
Our trusty old HP LaserJet 5MP, circa 1995, is still chugging
along and is still the cheapest way to print b&w. We really do
not want to dump it, but it does not have an ethernet interface,
only parallel and Mac serial. So we are hanging onto our old G3
Beige for the sole purpose of using its serial port via the
LaserWriter Bridge hack to allow other machines (except the XP,
which is OK) to print to the LaserJet.
I'd like to put the LaserJet on the ethernet network, and am
wondering which of the following options will work the best.
1. Try to locate the (now obsolete) ethernet card for a 5MP, and
install it directly on the printer.
2. Purchase an external HP Jet Direct server ... does this work for Macs?
3. Somehow use SFM on the XP Pro and connect the printer to it.
For anyone recommending this option, please break it down for
me, I have never ventured into configuring SFM or network print
services on Windows.
4. Any other options I haven't thought of?
TIA,
kazar
