Next message: Bruce Johnson: "Re: [WinMac] Ethernet for old LaserJet?"
I used to have a 5MP on my mixed LAN - hooked up
via a Farallon EtherWave. This hooks up to the
AppleTalk port on the printer and bridges to LAN.
Obsolete as well but should be plenty on eBay.
Probably $25 or so. I have used this solution
extensively - works great. (Now I'm using the
SMC router method described below)
[With XP/Win2K clients you should be able to print
via AppleTalk by creating a local AppleTalk port,
then the Win box "sees" the AT printer as well.]
Another way to go is to install an SMC Barricade
router - it comes with a print server port - this
is how I put my LJ 6MP on my LAN. The SMC is $80
and is without questions THE best router and has
4 downstream ports.
Yet another way is via a wireless router, but here
you have to pay attention to which ones can handle
AirTalk/Ethernet bridging - MOST wireless routers
DO NOT - make sure you research this thoroughly.
The final suggestion would be to get an old Mac,
any generation with 10B-T built in - let's say
one of the first PowerMacs - and use that as an
AT/LAN bridge and printer sharing enabled. Check
for one in the dumpster of an EDU facility. ;-)
