    What do you mean 'pushes'??

Do you mean running off of the server? Installing off of the server?

Much like Novell, you put up a publically accessible directory, you can
even map it as a drive, they can access it when connected to the
    network.

OUCH...on a Laptop?? I'm _really_ glad I'm not one of your students!
(Protectively hugging my dual 17" monitors that I use for those sorts of
    apps ;-)

It really depends on the apps. There _used_ to be network-based installs
of those programs, in that case speed depends a lot on the speed of the
server; in terms of raw speeds, NT is still a little slow on the file
service than Novell is. For most uses, this isn't that noticeable, from
    our experience.

However, since the time we went from a Novell-based network, to an NT
one most of the applications we have used have gone to a per/installed
user license from a per user (whihc allowed concurrent licensing) and
hard drive prices have plummeted, so most everyone gets the software
installed on their computers. So we've actually moved away from using
the network like you are talking about.
