Although I am just now barely scratching this particular surface, from
what I've read in my 2000 explorations, Intellimirror might be what you
are looking for. Supposedly (again, this is my interpretation of MS
propoganda) this technology will allow you to assign applications to
roaming profiles and have them install upon demand if the person logs onto
a machine that doesn't have the software. I haven't had a chance to try
any of this as at the moment it is taboo to run 2000 server and Active
Directory on our network, but I do have an off network experiment running
and will get to try this at some point.
If anyone else is using this I'd love to hear more about it. I tried SMS
back at version 1.1 but found it cost me more time than it saved.
