Susan,
I would certainly second the votes you have received for
IPNetRouter. A good resource for the various options
available is http://www.macintouch.com/accessrouters.html
It discusses Mac, PC, and Linux based software solutions as
well as dedicated hardware solutions.
Good luck
Harris

Personally I believe in hardware firewalls and run my Macs and Win98
machine behind a SonicWall which can be had for about $400 from
Buy.com. You don't need to install any special software anywhere and
the firewall is configured by a web browser. No muss, no fuss, no
reconfiguration of hardware/software, no incompatibilities. It just
works. There is also a model with 3 ports wihch wil lrun a DMZ
(Demiliterized Zone, where webservers are usually placed so that they
can get in and out securely).

Tim, Dan, Richard, Sadi, Harris, thanks for all the great information. The
links were very useful. PortDetective is handy.. and interesting to me as
relative newbie when it comes to net security/port control.
I started looking at MacSense's X-Router Internet Hub. It would provide the
advantage of not needing to rely on one of my workhorse computers for
routing purposes. A lot of people seem to be really pleased with it. I was
surprised though, that one person on MacInTouch said IPNetRouter was
_faster_ than X-Router. I would have expected a hardware solution to be
faster than a software one. There were also some comments about weak
security and limited port control with X-Router. Again, I would have
expected the opposite, that a software router would be less secure.
http://www.macintouch.com/accessrouters.html#xrouter
I think I will give IPNetRouter a try first, but in the long-term something
hardware-based seems as though it should be more suitable. Any X-Router
users out there who have also used IPNetRouter on a Mac/Win LAN?

Subject: printer offline question

We have a Unity 1200XL which is set up with an AppleTalk port etc. etc. to our NT Server.
It worked fine initially, then a few days ago it just started queueing up jobs but not printing them. When I try to print it gives me 'printer offline' messages despite the fact that the printer has just been turned on and its message indicator does not say anyhing about being offline...
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. I could not find anything in printer settings...I seem to recall seeing something about MacPrint somewhere on this list, would that help?
Our Tek Phaser 780 on the same LAN, also connected via an Appletalk port , is not showing any similar problems that I know of. Could it be the Unity's Appletalk port that is the problem??
I'm relatively new to Mac/NT/Windows printing issues.
Thank you!!
:) tom

Tom,
Do you have the NT Server set to capture this printer's port? If so,
turn it off and then see if you can see the actual printer (not the
printer's NT queue) in your Chooser or using something like Inter•Poll
or Apple Printer Utility. If it doesn't show up the network card on the
printer may be dead. If you have Apple Printer Utility (it's free) you
should be able to communicate directly with the printer and change many
settings, including it's name. Check to see that someone else with APU
didn't change it's name to something else. If it's capable of IP
printing assign it an IP number and then try to ping it. Since your Tek
Phaser 780 is printing fine via Appletalk through the server I don't
suspect any problems on the server side or Appletalk routing. Lastly,
hook it up directly to your Mac and see if it's visible in the Chooser.

Hi, Tom!
Try stopping and restarting the Print Spooler for Macintosh: It's in the
"Services" Control Panel. If that doesn't work, try stopping both the Print
Spooler for Macintosh .AND. the Spooler services. Then, just restart the
Mac spooler service first - This will first restart the Spooler service.
Cheers!
Dan

I solved my earlier this morning printer offline problem by reinstalling the Unity1200XL on the server...it did fine for test pages, but not for documents containing Postscript fonts.
HOWEVER...Postscript fonts being used on two Win98 machines are not appearing correctly in Framemaker 5.5.6.
Do I need to have Adobe Type Manager installed on the server?????
I plan next to check that I have the Postscript driver installed...

You MUST have Adobe Type Manager installed on any machine on which
you want to view Postscript fonts ON SCREEN. They should still print
correctly, but they don't display properly since Windows doesn't include
built-in support for Type1 fonts.
