        Well, Ron...

RAMDoubler is a product whose time has come... And gone... And now that
128 MB DIMMs have climbed from under $100 to over $250, come again!

Yes, if you have real RAM it certainly is better... But not every machine
has the capacity and/or machine owner have the budget for at least 96 MB of
RAM for a modern PowerPC Mac; so RAMDoubler is still a necessary evil.

[DISCLAIMER: I WAS A BETA TESTER FOR CONNECTIX 5-6 YEARS AGO.]

One good thing about RAMDoubler is that it still blows away MacOS'
half-assed virtual memory scheme, turning ON file mapping in the process.

I *still* haven't figured out how linux only needs a maximum of a 127 MB
swap partition; yet if you have a Mac with 256 MB of RAM you need a minimum
of 257 MB of *contiguous* disk space just to turn ON VM to get the benefits
of file mapping's more efficient use of RAM by only loading the most
commonly used code in each app. Remember Word 6.0 not being able to run on
61/71/8100's unless they had 16 MB of RAM as well as VM turned ON?

BTW, I was interviewed by Bruce Francis on CNBC, along with a Microsoft
exec, about all of the MSOffice for Mac problems back in February 1995, so
I've been intimately familiar with VM issues.

On the other hand, SpeedDoubler, IMHO, isn't really needed anymore. System
7.6.1 is about the last version where SpeedDoubler was really helpful.
Beyond that - System 8 - SpeedDoubler causes more problems than it solves.

In short, if you use RAMDoubler, just be careful and make sure you have
the latest certified version for your MacOS version.

        Happy Thanksgiving!
        Dan
