My original point was that there are now USB-Serial adapters and perhaps -
though I have no idea about this - one or more of them might work with the
older software.

Don't a decent number of people actually do this, including some on this
list? (I don't, though I have set up older Macs as http or file servers and
had them run 24/7 for weeks without trouble - a couple of IIsi's did
yeomen's service with AppleShare 3.0 for me.) Assuming a good power supply
(and I realize that this is the issue at hand here), Macs seem to run
pretty well for many people. If you're in a bldg with its own power backup
(as I was at my last university), you might not have to worry about the
power issue, no?

The relevant trade-off might be time saved in set-up and maintenance versus
time lost in recovering from (less frequent) nasty crashes.

(Stepping out of this thread now due to complete lack of experience in
these matters.)
