[WinMac] NT4 and Passwords for Macintosh Clients

Our business systems group is installing NT servers to support corporate
e-mail (Exchange) and file serving. In order to support the mobility of
many users, space on a file server has been allocated for each user to hold
their Personal Address Book and Personal Store (local mail folders).

All is well and good for PC clients, but Macintosh clients have been told
that passwords sent during Macintosh-to-NT authentication are sent in
clear-text. Since this is unacceptable, the support folks are not enabling
file server access for Macintosh clients.

Is this explanation correct? Does the NT server perform authentication
using clear-text passwords within AppleShare service? If so, are there any
simple methods to improve this situation that would have minimal client
impacts?

Thanks,

Brooks Peters
