I would highly recommend an Ethernet to Local Talk bridge. This will
allow you to local talk those printers behind one Ethernet connection.
The bridge will take the AppleTalk info and pipe it back and fourth fro
    Ethernet to Local talk.

One you have this in place, you can see the printers via AppleTalk just
like if you were on the local talk network yourself.

Below is the link for one such device...

    Good luck.

Subject: [WinMac] help with LocalTalk Bridge

    Dear WinMac folk:

I am a Mac guy with a WinNT machine for work at home. I am having
trouble connecting my new G4 to my old LaserWriter, and was hoping
you could help me. This past December (2002), I upgraded from an old
Mac Duo 2400 running OS 7.6 to a brand new Titanium G4 running OS X
(v.10.2.6). After looking through the archives, I found the emails
(below) recommending LocalTalk bridge. I downloaded it and could not
get it to work. I need to know how to make LocalTalk bridge work
with my configuration or, if it can't work, what my next best
    alternative is. Details follow:

Here is the situation. My G4 is connected to the Ethernet and the
Internet wirelessly via the Airport. The old Mac 2400 (OS 7.6 with
Open Transport 1.1.2) is wired to the Airport through its Duo Dock.
The Windows NT Workstation 4.0 machine is not currently on the
Ethernet. (I will be fixing that *after*.) There are two old laser
printers, an HP IIIp and an Apple LaserWriter Select 360. Both are
connected directly to the NT machine and separately, via AppleTalk,
to the 2400. Neither printer has an Ethernet option. (According to
the Web, neither printer supports an Ethernet option.)

I downloaded and installed LocalTalk Bridge onto the 2400 in hopes of
being able to print from the G4 on the LaserWriter Select 360 via the
2400. This requires that I restart the 2400. When I restart, the
icon for LocalTalk bridge comes up with an "X" through it, indicating
that it is off. I tried a bunch of stuff to get LocalTalk Bridge to
come up active, but nothing worked. I browsed the Web and the only
thing I found that even looked relevant was at:
    http://www.gla.ac.uk/~gwm1h/ot/ot1.1.2/OT_1.1.2_ReadMe-Part2.html:

    # The combination of Open Transport 1.1.2, LocalTalk Bridge 2.1f2,
Global Village Toolbox and GlobalFax extensions causes a crash. This
also happens when using classic networking. The workaround is to move
the LocalTalk Bridge file to the Extension folder, renaming it to
"aLocalTalk Bridge". You can make an alias and rename the alias as
desired. Put the alias wherever you want, including the Control
Panels folder. This will allow the LocalTalk Bridge to load before
Global Village and avoid the cause of the crash.

I tried this as well. It didn't work. I don't know what to do next.

My overall plan is to get the G4 to talk to the LaserWriter Select
and then to add an Ethernet card to the NT machine so that everything
is linked together. Here are my questions: (1) Can someone tell me
how to get LocalTalk Bridge to connect the G4 to the LaserWriter?
    (2) If not, what is my next best option? (3) If a hardware bridge is
my next best option, what model, what brand and are there any tricks
to hooking it up? (4) Another possibility is to add an Ethernet card
to my NT machine (which I am planning on anyway) and then loading
some software to the NT to make it a software bridge. Given that
this is a workstation machine, which I don't usually use while I am
printing from my Mac, is this a reasonable option? If so, how do I
go about it and what software do I use? -- Please cc me at

Thanks so much for your time,
