[WinMac] OS-X Server vs Just OS-X

Subject: [WinMac] OS-X Server vs Just OS-X

We have a small network of about 10 Macs and 5 PCs, running
AppleshareIP 6.3 on a G3 B&W tower (OS 9.2). The server has a 36Gb
UltraWide LVD SCSI drive that it shares to the network.

We are about to upgrade the server to a G4 tower, and I thought I
would take the opportunity to switch to OS-X as soon as Dantz
releases OS-X Retrospect, which we run on the server to back up both
the server's drives, as well as all the other computers on the
network.

Do I get any additional performance or functional benefit out of
running OS-X Server, over just setting up an OS-X machine and sharing
its drive? Would the straight OS-X drive share be available to the
PCs? (Obviously, if not, then my question is moot.) Note that we do
not use the print server or email components of the server.
