Linux will not now or ever cause a problem with a Windows system.
Separate partitions, separate OS'es.

Possibly. I've seen faulty memory give people absolute FITS with weird,
hard to diagnose problems.

If this thing has DIMMS, swap 'em around, see if the problem intensifies
or goes away.

Another thing that causes a host of hard to diagnose problems in Windows
are the video drivers. go to Standard VGA drivers, uninstall any drivers
specific to your video card and redownload a current versions, install it.

Alas, he nailed it right there on the head. Do you recall that old Gary
Larsen cartoon with the guy looking at the Horse Veterinary Manual,
where all the solutions were 'Shoot'...welcome to the wild and wacky
World o' Windows, where more often than not the solution to your
problems is to just shoot it.

I would personally, however look for someone with experience with more
than one pc ;-)

No, you do NOT need to reformat a hard drive to reinstall windows!
