We use EZIP on about 14 servers. Some also have the optional IP printing
module (which I may say is FAST and reliable).

It is very fast to set up, and the new 2.1 versions (not out yet) handles
large amounts of data rather quickly, however you will need a punchy server.
We currently have a server with a single NIC at 100 full, dual processor
(Pentium II 300 MHz) and 512 Megs of RAM. When we get about 40 users on the
Mac side, the CPU usage goes up to about 50 percent, The Mac serving starts
to chug. But most of the time it runs rather nicely. The best thing about
it is that it supports full length passwords and encryption without having
to MANUALLY enter users name AND passwords into the system like you do in
MacserverIP for DES encryption. EZIP uses Appleshare DHX UAM to give you
that so no additional software is needed on the Mac side other than the
recent version of AppleTalk. This was a big concern for us with 5000 users
8-). It is also a bit pricey, especially with the printing support (which
*IS* worth it), but it works. I would inquire as to when the next version
will be publicly available...and if you can download a test version to try.
We actually run it on a separate server for printers, with about 50 printers
installed and running, zilch problems, whereas with SFM we had blue screens
all the time, stuck print spools and misc other problems. You just need to
install a small chooser like utility to select the printer, you can download
the PPD file from the server and it is fast since it uses IP instead of
AppleTalk.
