Welcome to the lack of knowledge of most IT Managers. There are MANY
protocols that chatter and yes AppleTalk does chatter, however for a
properly running and configured network, as well as clients, there should be
no problem. It was turned off because she a> doesn't want to support
AppleTalk b> doesn't know HOW to support AppleTalk.

We run an Enterprise network here with all Cisco Switches, we have VLANS out
the wazoo and AppleTalk zones for all 10 of our buildings. No problems.

Now, as to the second part of your question, if you are printing strictly to
LaserWriter's then yes, there are products available to make your Macs talk
totally IP over the network. W2K supports AFP/IP which is talking to the
server via IP. You can also use LPR to set up a desktop printer (using
Apple's Desktop Printing Utility) to print to printers set up on the NT
Print server. We use ExtremeZ-IP for IP file sharing on our W2K box, we
believe it outperforms the Services for Macintosh, also it has an IP print
module that allows you to use a little client utility to select the printer,
it then talks to the server via IP for printing, but the snag is that most
InkJets still need AppleTalk to print from Macs.

So if you need to print to a InkJet, it is either a direct connection, or
AppleTalk. If you turn AppleTalk off, then your only option is direct
connect.

Subject: [WinMac] Pure TCP/IP communications on Mac?

I handle technical issues for my school's newspaper. We run iMacs while
the whole rest of the school runs PCs. Recently our school network
manager disabled our access to the school's internet network because she
claimed that our computers communicate via TCP/IP+AppleTalk and she says
the AppleTalk component is bogging down the network.

Is there any truth to this? Whether or not there is, is it possible to
make the computers communicate purely through TCP/IP? If so, how?

Thanks!
