Hi again,

I am going to throw open a discussion that I have had with Dan and on two
other lists to this list as I am getting desperate. I have not had any
success at connecting a cable modem to my UMAX Pulsar (Euro S900). I have
followed the skimpy Mac instructions that came with my 3Com cable modem,
i.e. set the "connect" to "Ethernet" in the TCP/IP control panel and then
set "configure" to "Using DHCP server". The result has been that the entire
system on my Pulsar has also slowed to a crawl and a pause after a couple of
cycles is visible. Programs such as Microsoft Entourage or Internet Explorer
take forever, despite the machine having 160.4 MB of free memory with
virtual memory
turned off. I have as of yet been unable to download any e-mail as Entourage
has yet to complete an e-mail download cycle after twenty minutes!!! There
is therefore no way to be absolutely sure that I am actually accessing the
Internet. With the TCP/IP control panel open, I can see that the IP address
changes about every 30 seconds.

It is hard to tell what is going on, but something is slowing either the OS
or the processor to a crawl. I have had two tech guys trying to get two
different routers (LinkSys and US Robo) to work with the cable connection
and a Win PC but they won't. They also say that they have not been
successful at getting any techincal data that would help them in the area
from the companies involved (ISP and cabel TV provider). Does this ring any
bells with anyone?

My UMAX Pulsar is by the way running OS 9 and has a G3 Processor ugrade.

Cheers,

Brian
