Next message: Matti Haveri: "[WinMac] PPP-callback and -LCP extensions"
Greets, and apologies for an off-topic post.
Short version of question: Where can anyone recommend I go looking
for advice/solutions on Vax-->WinNT--> Printing solutions? We will
be forced Real Soon Now to do all printing from our VAX via TCP/IP
and don't have TCP/IP capable printers everywherre on campus. The
though is to run lpd on our main NT Print server, send VAX jobs to
IT, and let it "groom" them and send them out to the right printer.
Details, what little I have so far, are in the...
Long version of the question:
Here's what I have so far from one of our VAX Admins:
"When printing reports from the VAX many times we need to print landscape.
The way that the VAX prints landscape is to use a form qualifier when issuing
the print command. There are two standards that can be used ... PCL and
Postscript. The utility that prints Postscript remotely does not print
directly to an IP address so we had no way to print directly to a remote
printer. This utility, DECprint Supervisor for OpenVMS (DCPS), only prints
to printers directly connected to the VAX or printers that are capable of
communication via LAT. The other alternative is to use PCL. I have setup
VAX print queues, using UCX (TCP/IP Services for VMS), and I was able to send
PCL control strings to the remote printers and change the page orientation to
landscape. This is why we are proposing to use PCL over IP to print to
remote printers. I did try the suggestion that Matt made - print to an NT
print queue and have that print queue print to the remote printer. This
worked as long as I didn't send any PCL format strings. When I sent a job
with no form, the printer printed. When I sent a job with a PCL string to
control the form, nothing printed."
Again, sorry for the errant post. If anyone knows of a "WinVax"
list, that'd probably be a much more appropriate place! Please
E-mail me and clue me in if you know of one.
Thanks,
...ROMeyn
