Oh c'mon.
For a longtime Mac user with *no* Unix experience, Windows NT 4.0 or
2000 will be easier. It's not MacOS, but it's got a fairly
straightforward GUI. It doesn't require you to set up your own swap
partition. Password protecting directories under Apache involves
.htaccess files and running htpasswd from a command line. Under
NT/2000, it involves dropping down a menu and choosing "Security."
Linux is *not* inherently more secure. i'd say it's inherently more
stable, but that's because it's Unix, not Windows.
The problem with Windows is that because it's easier to get up and
running, it's easier to be lulled into a false sense of competence.
That is, there's a lot involved with putting *any* machine on the
Internet serving files - security issues, connectivity, scalability,
etc. Whether you're doing it on a Mac, Windows, or Linux, you really
*should* buy a book about running a web server on that OS, and invest
some time (maybe not 8 weeks, but how about 2 weeks?) to do it right.
