This response is late since rarely check my "mailing list" email address. Here's what I bought for my home network:

$59 8-port 100baseT Ethernet hub with AUI and 10BaseT bridge:

    $100 iRouter

$40 used 56K US Robotics external Modem

For only $200, I have an outstanding home network. I know you said that you didn't want to share internet access, but WHY NOT? The iRouter assigns IP addresses to the local computers with it's DHCP server. All my macs and PCs are on the internet, and sharing files with each other, and it was extremely easy. I know almost nothing about networking, but I set this up with no problem. And when/if my area gets DSL or Cable, I just unplug the iRouter and plug in a DSL/Cable - Modem/Router.
