I completely disagree with the second part of this. There are
some simple precautions we can take which will at least slow it
down - even if we can't eliminate it altogether. One of the most
obvious is not to publish our email addresses in public places.
Almost all the SPAM I've ever received has gone to addresses
trawled from web pages where my email address has appeared. Since
I use unique addresses in each case - including for each mailing
list to which I'm subscribed, I can identify precisely where the
spammers have obtained my address. That was why I was able to
report this incident to Darryl. In fact I've had 11 SPAM messages
in the last 4 weeks sent to the address I've used to subscribe to
Win-Mac. I know it's hardly a deluge - but it's 11 too many when
a simple precaution would have prevented it. And there's no
telling how many times this address will be sold on to others.
In general I'm not at all happy that my email address is being
published like this. If I'd realised at the time I'd probably
never have joined the list in the first place - let alone posted.
