Next message: Jeff Wechter: "[WinMac] RE: Epson 850NE SW RIP"
My replacement 850Ne arrived from Epson yesterday - UPS overnight, that
somehow managed to take two days. Well, all the bad things I had said about
the original, none apply to the replacement. Basically, it was a snap to
install, configure the NIC, and configure the drivers and monitors on both
my mac and pc. I was up and printing within 5 minutes of opening the box -
no tricks necessary.
The replacement printer has the new NIC (forget the model) that lacks the
10base2 port but works with the Epson Net!2 software. My understanding is
that if you order a refurb model, the lack of the draw determines what NIC
will be installed.
As a test, I printed a NIC status page, and the first document that I could
open on both the mac and PC (the okeydokeypro missed dialogs document from
the mac, and the MS outlook "welcome to outlook" message), and they both
printed fine over the ethernet link - fast and good quality. The printer
showed up on appletalk on the mac and network neighborhood on the PC -
again, no tricks needed.
This would have been a very pleasant experience if I haven't received a dud
in the first place - I guess sh*t happens. But Epson was very responsive
and rushed a replacement to me which works perfectly. The 850Ne refurbs are
still on sale at zones.com:

A good alternative configuration is what Dan mentioned yesterday: Get the
cheaper 850 (non-networkable), plus EPSON RIP3 and Dave on a spare powermac
and you have a postscript color network printer.
