    My solution was (and don't laugh) hook up an OLD apple monitor (that wan't multi-scan) like the old 13"type. It was the refresh rate that the computer 'remembered' so when I hooked the old monitor up, it could only use one setting and it automatically reset to this. Now this was sometime ago (probably os 7.6.1 or so) but it might work if you have an old monitor (non-multiscan) around. Also were you networked? Could you login remotely and just change the refresh rates until you got one that worked with the apple monitor (75hz maybe)? Or boot off a cd or diskette that had a standard os which should be the correct refresh rate for an apple monitor and
    therefore correct the settings? I just don't think it sounds like hardware.....Lu
