[WinMac] Cable Scanner?

This may be slightly off-topic (and I apologize for that), but I am
not our campus' network "guy" and am thus not on any lists that deal
explicitly with network management/deployment/troubleshooting on
which I might ask the following question:

Is anyone here aware of a handheld device that can scan a segment of
BNC (thin ethernet) for shorts or continuity problems WITHOUT
disconnecting all the computers on that segment or even having the
computers on that segment active?

We HAVE one, but it is dying. It's an 8-year-old (or more!) HP model
J2181A Cable Scanner and it does just what I have described. We've
had reps from various companies stop by and when we mention the
desirability of this very important (to us) feature they either look
at us cross-eyed and tell us it's impossible or tell us that none of
their cutting-edge many-thousands-of-dollars scanners can do it.
Then we whip this thing out and demonstrate and they just scratch
their heads.

What do any of YOU do for your Thin Ethernet cable testing?

TIA,
...ROMeyn
