Products Affected
Windows -- Quicken 98, 99, 2000
Macintosh -- Quicken 7, Quicken 98
Q: How do I convert data files from Quicken 7 for Macintosh or Quicken 98
for Macintosh to Quicken 98, 99 or 2000 for Windows?

A: When importing Quicken 7 for Macintosh or Quicken 98 for Macintosh data
into the Quicken 98, 99 or 2000 for Windows programs, you can import the
entire data file all at once. In previous versions of Quicken for
Macintosh, you must convert and import each Quicken account separately. If
you want to use Quicken for Macintosh data with Quicken for Windows, export
all or part of the information in the Quicken for Macintosh data file to a
QIF file (Quicken Interchange Format), then import the data into a newly
created Quicken for Windows data file.

Follow this procedure exactly to convert Quicken 7 for Macintosh or Quicken
98 for Macintosh data to a QIF file that can be imported in Quicken for
Windows:

Before exporting information from a Quicken for Macintosh data file,
prepare the data file by completing the following steps:

Break up split transactions that contain more than 30 split lines.
Remove special characters, such as *, &, ^, %, $, #, @, !, ~, <, >, :, |
and } from account names, security names, categories, and classes.
If a category and an account name have the same name, rename one of them so
that all categories and account names are unique.
Make sure that none of the transactions have more than 29 characters in the
Category field.
Set the Macintosh system Date and Numbers control panels to U.S. format.
Unhide all hidden accounts.

After preparing the Quicken for Macintosh data file, follow these steps to
create a QIF file:

If it's not already open, open the Quicken for Macintosh data file from
which you want to export data.
Condense the file for export by reindexing and saving a copy of the Quicken
data file. (To reindex the file, press COMMAND+OPTION+B while the data file
is open.)
After reindexing, choose Save a Copy from File menu.
Give the saved copy a new name and click OK.
Open the newly saved data file by choosing Open from the File menu and
selecting that file.
Choose Export on the File menu.
Choose whether you want to export the entire data file or part of it.
To export all the information in the data file, point to Export on the File
menu and select Full Export.
To export selected parts of the information in the data file, point to
Export on the File menu and select Custom Export. Selecting Custom Export
permits a choice of accounts to include in the export file.
Click the Transactions In checkbox.
>From the drop-down list, choose All (the default) to export all Quicken 7
for Macintosh accounts; or choose Selected to specify which accounts to
export.
If you choose Selected, Quicken opens the Select Accounts window.
Put a checkmark next to the name of each account you want to include by
clicking it.
If you selected Custom Export, you can choose to export transactions only
from a range of dates you specify. Change the dates accordingly in the From
and Through fields.
If you selected Custom Export, select which other data file items you want
to export, such as the category list, classes, and so on.
To create the QIF file, click Export.
The QIF file must have a name between three and eight characters long
followed by the .qif extension (for example, Business.qif), for Quicken for
Windows to recognize it. This file may be easier to find if you save it to
your desktop.
Copy the QIF file to a diskette formatted for a Windows operating system.

Import the QIF file into Quicken for Windows using this procedure:

Start Quicken for Windows.
Choose New on the File menu.
Choose New Quicken File in the Creating new file window and click OK.
Enter an appropriate filename and location for your new Quicken for Windows
data file and click OK.
Since this is a new data file, Quicken automatically displays the Create
Accounts window.
Create a new checking account with any name you choose. Use a zero balance
and the current date.
Insert the diskette with the QIF file you saved from Quicken for Macintosh.
In Quicken 99 and 2000, from the File menu, point to Import, and choose QIF
File. In Quicken 98, point to File Operations on the File menu and select
Import.
Use the Find File or Browse button to locate the QIF file, then click OK.
The QIF Import window prompts you for the filename you are importing and
the account name into which you are importing it.The account to import into
is the new Quicken for Windows account just created. The QIF file to import
is the one created on the Macintosh.
At the bottom of the QIF Import window, there are checkboxes for data file
items you can include in your Quicken for Windows file. Click the
checkboxes for the data items you want to import.

Note: You will have to reestablish all scheduled transactions, Quickfill
transactions, loan setups, online account setups, online payee lists,
memorized reports, and security price histories. These are not carried over
through the export/import function.

After the import finishes, check to make sure the account balances in the
new Quicken for Windows data file are the same as the account balances in
the Quicken for Macintosh data file. If they don't match, look for
duplicate or missing transactions in the account register of the newly
created Quicken for Windows file. Quicken for Windows may not recognize
some transfers between accounts if they are part of multiple split
transactions, so you may need to look for those transactions and bring them
up to date as required.
