Oops, sorry. I didn't check the site; just took the URL from the
readme file, which is still sitting around on my hard disk.
I have the original .sit archive backed up on a zip disk, and I could
mail it to you backchannel if you like. The .sit file is just 11 K or
so.

Yeah, why not? We are talking legitimate freeware here, not piracy on
a public mailing list, right?

Subject: What kind of hard drive does the IBM Aptiva 2168 have?

Hi,
I would like to get a larger hard drive for my kid's IBM Aptiva 2168. There
doesn't appear to be a SCSI card, so is it right to assume that what is in
the box now is an IDE drive? Is there a sure fire way of telling? Any
recommendations on what to buy? It seems to me that IBM drives are the best
buy at this time.
Cheers,
Brian Durant

It is included in the package when you buy CanOpener. Hope this helps.

IDE allows 2 drives per channel, which can be the 2 hard drives, zip and
CDROM. The floppy drive isn't a IDE devices but uses its own interface.

Dear Brian,
This one is pretty easy, even without opening the box. There's a >98%
probability that it's IDE/ATAPI. You can go to IBM's web site, then go to
Product Index and drill down from there; or you can right-click on My
Computer (assuming windoze 95/98) and look in the Device Manager... Just
double-click on the drive itself.
Cheers!

Hi, I've been lurking, so this is my first post. I realize that
this may be the stuff of holy wars, but I just have to ask...
I've been a dedicated user of SoftWindows v1.something, but
upgraded to a G3 Mac a while back. SoftWindows still works, but
it won't read the ATAPI drive. The tech support folks at Insignia
said (essentially) "tough luck, you need to upgrade..." and they
were unwilling to even offer me a discount for my customer
loyalty and all the good things I've had to say about them in
the past... bummer. I figure, if I've got to go the full
upgrade path, I should consider Virtual PC. I've been checking
the web pages that discuss this, but none that I've found
compare the latest version of SoftWindows to the latest version
of Virtual PC. I've certainly been able to find Virtual PC
available with some discounts, while everywhere I've looked
seems to be asking full face value for SoftWindows... or more.
I figure that Virtual PC has fewer compatibility issues, but
SoftWindows is probably faster? Does anyone have any late
breaking news on recent comparisons, issues, and where to find
the best deals? Other random thoughts???
thanks,
jay

Jay,
I a similar experience with SoftWindows... only I had, like I thought
I was supposed to do, sent in my registration card when I installed
on my Mac.... and when I called Insignia some months later with a
TCP problem, I was told that my warranty had expired about a month
before my call...
...in other words, apparently, by sending in the registration card I
started a clock that eventually prevented me from getting help...
they told me, like they told you, I could buy another unit and then
pleased to help me...
...instead of purchasing another "unit", I purchased Virtual PC, and
it works great!

I hope that someone can help me.
My accountant has advised me to use QuickBooks Pro.
I must use Virtual PC to use this program.
I am having tremendous trouble getting the program to print through my Epson
1520 printer.
Also, I cannot get windows to recognize my ZIP drive.
Any suggestions?
Sincerely,
Nancy

Hello All!
Jumping in for the first time here! Hope to get some help and help someone
someday too.
I have had trouble printing from Virtual PC 2.1 (with an upgrade to 2.3) on
my G3 PowerBook to my Epson 1250 color printer.
The printer works fine with all Mac applications.
Also, my Windows '95 (Virtual PC) will not recognize the Zip drive...can't
back up my files, YIKES!
I appreciate all your (collective) help!
Regards,
Nancy

Well, you can create a new drive container within Virtual PC...this is a
file in the Mac OS, then just back up the file within the MacOS...voila!
backed up data!

I have been using QBPro6 on a PBG3/250 with VPC and Win95 for about 6 months.
You have to follow Connectix's support page instructions "to the letter" in
setting up printers through VPC.
How is the 1520 connected to the Mac? Serial, USB, or Ethernet? If USB, I
think Win95/VPC 2.x doesn't support USB. You need at least Win98 and maybe VPC
3, which was just released. If it's serial or Ethernet, then you may have to
experiment with more generic Win95 drivers for the 1520. Go to the Connectix
Support site at http://www.connectix.com/support/index.html and search for
"Virtual PC" and "print" -- there are at least 19 articles there.
I have a Canon BJC-80 which prints through the Win95 BJC-70 driver, and an
HP-LJ6MP which uses the ancient Win95 Apple Laserwriter II driver. I couldn't
get the HP to print with any other driver, including HP's and Adobe's Win95
generic PS drivers.
>Also, I cannot get windows to recognize my ZIP drive.
You can't see Zip or Jaz drives as the C: or D: drive. However, you can mount
them as Shared Folders in VPC (from Preferences at startup, or from within VPC
by clicking on the Folders button) and then see them in Network Neighborhood
or Windows Explorer the same as any "networked" drive.
I routinely use my Zip as drive G: (C: and D: are VPC container files, E: is
the CD-ROM, F: is a shared folder on my Mac HD, accessible to both MacOS and
Win95, and G: is either the Zip or Jaz, as needed.

Have a Zip disk in the drive, launch VPC, and set the ZIP disk up as
a shared folder. The disadvantage is that as long as it's shared, VPC
will ask you to insert the disk when launched if it's not already
there.
