If you have the resources available to you, it might be worth trying to
network the Wintel to another Wintel first. This would take the
cross-platform issue out of the equation for the time being, and let you
know at least which end is causing the problem.

Also, see if you can connect two Macs using DAVE on both (not AppleShare).

I'm afraid I'm no Windows guru either, but I have to use one at work, and
have found that DAVE on my Mac makes it fit into the Wintel networking
world perfectly, whether one-to-one with a crossover cable, or through a
hub and over the LAN.
