Thanks to everyone who responded. Thanks for the info about COPSTALK and
PCMacLAN. I had hoped that Dave could handle the connection because I
have it already installed on my Powerbook. I will try and expand based
on the questions that I received in reply from from Nik and Curtis.

I bet the MS side isn't configured correctly also. As I am a Mac person,
and only started down the Windows98 path a week ago, I have little idea
how to set-up the Wintel machine.

Please don't laugh too hard, I realized after a number of utterly
frustrating hours that I am pretty clueless when it comes to networking.
The Mac side really gave me a false sense of security.

Here is what I did:
Because the 4000N handles TCP/IP over ethernet and I since I have
already used Dave on my Powerbook to connect via TCP/IP to my clients NT
server, I thought that this would be the easiest connection.

I installed JetAdmin on the WinLaptop and connected the WinLaptop to my
ethernet hub (Asante FriendlyNet). I set the 4000N EIO Menu to enable
TCP/IP and ETALK. I determined that the 4000N has an IP address from
printing out the configuration data. Started JetAdmin and located the
device. The screen with printer name was greyed out since the 4000N
doesn't have a name. I followed the "Next" screen to where the device ID
was listed. I typed in the IP address and gateway from the config data
sheet. The error returned is "configuration error". I haven't a clue
what this could be and why I get an error when JetAdmin finds the
printer.(I think?)

Since this didn't work, I tried to use Dave sharing to connect the
WinLaptop to the Powerbook and then print via the Powerbook. I created a
new location in the Location Manager so that I could enable a new set of
Dave prefs. I created a new TCP/IP location in TCP/IP control panel. On
the WinLaptop, I opened the network control panel and entered an IP
address, name etc., started print and file sharing and selected the MS
Windows Client. I rebooted everything and both winlaptop and powerbook
crashed. Really ugly. I had to start the Powerbook with extentions off
and start again.

It was about this time that I decided to write to the list gurus since
it is obvious I am completely out of my league here.

Thanks again for any help.
Regards
Philip
