That's the basic theory of ODBC. But each vendor must write an ODBC driver
for their particular database, and they need to write one for every platform
they want to support.

<rant>
Unlike many vendors, Microsoft tends to only write and individually release
ODBC drivers for Windows. There is no Mac (or UNIX) ODBC driver for Access
(not even from a third party like Intersolv or Visigenic). And if you want
the Microsoft SQL ODBC driver for the Mac, you have to buy Office98. The
Microsoft SQL ODBC driver is not available separately, nor have I found it
for download anywhere.
