I could be wrong but I think the Network Browser is Apple's attempt to
ween people off the Chooser. Apple has made known its intentions to
migrate away from non-IP protocols. They have done it with Appleshare IP;
they have done it with desktop printing via IP (LPR).

The only part of the Appletalk protocol that does not have an IP
replacement at the moment is ZIP (Zone Information Protocol) and NBP (Name
Binding Protocol), which is front-ended by the Chooser. I think the role
of a new directory service is reserved for the Network Services Location
Manager, NSLM (not to be confused with the Location Manager) . I imagine
the Network Browser is going to be the new front end to the NSLM.

Unfortunately, I don't think NSLM is ready for primetime (I certainly have
not seen anything other than the SDK), but there are plugins for it in 8.5
(Look in your extensions folder: that is what SLPPlugin and DNSPlugin are
for. SLP is Service Location Protocol, a developing protocol for
advertising, registering and locating specific services. DNS is the
well-known Domain Name Service, there are fields in DNS information that
identify services available on a machine ).

So we are left with a Network Browser that does nothing more than act as a
groovy Chooser. I think the intention is to get people use to using the
Network Browser and then eventually implement the NSLM on the back-end of
it. Voila a smooth transition to the new services. But those services are
not there yet.

The fact that the Network Browser doesn't fully work like the chooser, is
probably due to the fact that its real use lies in the future...
