Thank you for the clarifications Dan.

The point I was trying to make regarding the new ease of using repair
utilities on the Mac/iMac is:

. . . Whereas it formerly was of utmost importance to have as many
different sources of booting up as possible in order to complete repairs
(and still is helpful) . . .

. . . The issue of from where or how you boot in order to do disk
repairs has almost become a non-issue anymore, or at least has become
very much less of an issue.

. . . Norton Utilities, since 3.5 as you pointed out, do not require
extensions to be on anymore in order to complete disk repairs . . .

. . . although the Norton Shared library and the ObjectSupportLib may
now be in either of. . .

1) in the folder which holds the application (if you boot with
extensions off) or

2) in the Extensions Folder of the System Folder (if you boot with
extensions active).

. . . Also the improved Disk First Aid (DFA) does its job now on the
disk it started from or from the disk that was booted from whether you
have extensions on or off so that you might not have much trouble
getting that user to reboot with extensions off anymore.

-- (a point of confusion to me is the version 8.2 and 8.5.1 of DFA both
appear to behave the same but have overlapping creation and modified
dates in the get info window ??? ;) I can't figure out which one is the
most recent version --

. . . iGuess the next step is to get a version of TimBuk2 that will run
whether or not the extensions are active or not (might be a tough one).

. . . And we can't forget the option of Self-Mounting-Images of your
Disk Utilities that will mount even though the extensions are off . . .
not totally the answer . . .

But, easy? to use disk utilities on the iMac? . . . let's just say it is
a whole lot easier than it used to be.

Thanks again for the clarifications, Dan. Simplicity is in the details.
There is no understanding w/out understanding the details, and you give
very good details.

Thanks!
