[WinMac] Paper size

I have a question about the default paper size on Macs.

Background: I use a Mac for most of my work. I receive Excel files daily
from both platforms. In going through Page Setup there are two boxes,
first you get to Excel's, from there you can click on Options and get to
the print driver's box. In the print driver's box (LW 8.5.1) you can
select the paper size. Just to be annoying, they left the "(small)" paper
sizes in from when the Mac could only print in the middle of the page.
And they (from The Far Side) thoughtfully left them as the default. In
using Excel (and others), I have found workarounds to make the larger
size the default. Startup templates and such.

My problem: Somehow all the files I use which are last saved on a PC
always show up as "US Letter (Small)", instead of "US Letter". Is there
some way to retain this info after saving on a PC? Perhaps deleting the
(Small) choice completely from the Mac system, which (I hope) would force
the software to use only the full sheet. The extra quarter of an inch on
each side can really add up, esp with headers and footers.
