I, too, would be interested in discovering why US Letter Small is a
default. Except in my case, my Word files are not transferred from a PC.

When I upgraded (on my Mac) from Word 5.1 to Word 98, all files created in
5.1 (paper size A4) opened as US Letter Small in 98. It drove me mad until
I figured out a workaround.

Does anyone know why this happens?

In general, Word 98 is not a bad product, but oh for the days when the user
told the word processor what to do, not the other way around. I've tried to
take a shotgun to those oh-so-helpful automatic processes in Word 98, but I
can't get at all of them. I suppose what I'm saying is that there is a
definite niche for a moron version of Word.

Lesley Vita
