this seems like the infamous Apple Menu Options bug in which AMO tries to
lookup an alias to a folder/file it doesn't have access rights to. It gets
stuck in a loop continuously querying the server. With Apple's AppleShare
server, a locked client will cause the activity meter on the server to
skyrocket. Presumably the same would happen with an NT server since it's a
client not server bug.

I've never seem this from the IAMOB. Doing a force quit of the Chooser
usually sees the server volume appear on the desktop immediately.

yes, the bug is not actually in Apple Menu Options. There's an alias
manager call in MacOS which doesn't properly handle an error code, but the
privilege problem doesn't happen for the Admin. I was hoping this
long-standing bug would be fixed in 8.5 or 8.5.1, but no. Let's hope 8.6?

disabling the Apple Menu Options control panel is a guaranteed fix, but
most people find emptying the recent documents folder works for them. I
have seen cases when the problem persists after emptying these folders and
deleting the AMO prefs, but there is a way to use MacsBug to identify which
file the access is failing on. I used this a few times successfully.
