It depends on what "BEST" means to you. I backup several Mac , Novell, NT,
Solaris and Linux Servers with DDS2 & DDS3 DAT Drives. at different
divisions, we have not had problems with DAT, although I would recommend
DDS3(higher capacity). DLT, AIT, CD-ROM , DVD-RAM, MO they all have their
places, for regular nightly backups, DDS3 works very well for us. For
Archival backups, we use CDR-ROM.

As far as software, if you are mainly backing up macintosh data, I would
recommend using Retrospect Remote on a macintosh to backup the macintosh
files.

As far as backing up the Novell and NT Servers, I hav had good results with
both Backup Exec and Arcserve, I use Legato's Networker on Solaris Servers
(Standalone)

The price of some DAT Drives from http://www.warehouse.com

Mac DRI2104 LaCie DDS-3 DAT Drive with Retrospect $1,149.95

PC DR9524 DDS-2 LACIE 8GB EXT DRIVE PC $749.95

PC DR9526 DDS-3 LACIE 12GB EXT TAPE DRIVE $1,179.95

As long as you select your applications taking the cross-platform issues
seriously, you should not have any problems using "intranet" applications on
either NT or ASIP.

ASIP 6.x is very good, it is finally a product I would be comfortable
Recomending.
(I've used it since 3.x, but it has always been, to put it mildly,
LOUSY )
Again, the "BEST" solution would depend on a LOT of different variables.

I don't speak for them, but even if I did, they'd deny it.

BTW, $7,000.00 might not be an outrageous amount, I would have to know how
many servers, clients and how many GB's of data are being backed up in
ordwer to make a more informed opinion.
