        Dear Deb,

        Liam raised a few good points. However, what we need to find out is which
apps your creative staff is using. At this point in time, the DTP apps are
the critical "determining factor" in choosing, or switching to, a given
platform and OS.

        Also, please keep in mind that the operating system is not the platform:
x86 is *NOT* Windows NT. With Windows NT, it can be run on either an x86
(preferably a premium brand like an IBM Intellistation); or on a 600 mHz
Compaq (DEC) Alpha.

        Just the same, on the x86 platform, you can run Windoze 95/98, Windows NT,
BeOS, Linux, or others. I do NOT recommend windoze 95/98 under ANY
circumstances... Not even on laptops.

 -----------

        Here is a quick rundown of what is, and is not available on each platform;
plus a few comments:

        PageMaker, Illustrator, ATM Deluxe, and Photoshop: MacOS and x86/NT.
Photoshop also has MMX extensions for PII acceleration. [MMXCore is a
plug-in in Photoshop 4, and integrated into Photoshop 5.] In addition,
Photoshop under NT really SCREAMS with multiple x86 CPU's;

        PageMaker, Illustrator, and Photoshop will also run well under AlphaNT and
FX!32 v1.4;

        QuarkXPress 4.0x is native 680x0 Mac, PowerPC Mac, x86/NT, and now
AlphaNT. However, QuarkXPress 4.0.x is a dog, especially on PowerPC Mac;

        Corel Draw 8 is native PowerPC Mac, x86/NT, and AlphaNT;

        Corel PhotoPaint is native x86/NT, AlphaNT, and *I think* PowerPC Mac;

        Corel/Bitstream has an ATM Deluxe replacement that is native AlphaNT.

 -----------

        Lastly, Corel and Quark are now bundling their products together: This is
important if you decide to go the AlphaNT route.

        Yours truly,
        Daniel L. Schwartz,
