You don't say if the 'laptop' is a Mac. If it is, RAS access must be set
to 'Allow any authentication including clear text'

Settings
 Control Panels
  Network
   Services
    Remote Access Service
     Properties
      Network
       Encryption Settings
        Allow any authentication including clear text
       OK
       Continue
       Close
       Restart
