I have followed the thread on bootable NT CD's with some interest.

IMHO, there is a "mis-connect" on this issue.

Yes, you can "boot" a PC from a standard MS WinNT 4.0 CD - if the PC BIOS
is set correctly. *However*, from this boot you can only do the same thing
that you can do from the standard 3 floppy boot. It is *not* the same
experience that you have with a Mac. You cannot run other applications, nor
can you do anything else. The *only* thing you can do is the same as with
the 3 floppy boot, such as emergency repair, reinstallation, etc.

I can think of a possible work-around to this, involving creating a working
copy of NT on a burned CD with the correct ARC path in the boot.ini file on
the burned CD, but I have not tried this, as I don't have a CD burner. It
is still not the same thing as a "standard MS WinNT 4.0 CD" and due to the
nature of the ARC path is system specific to the machine for which the CD
would be created.

On a Mac, you can boot from any CD that has a valid System folder on the
CD, and do anything else you would normally do with that Mac. However,
since the CD is obviously a read-only mechanism, you cannot modify anything
in the System folder (such as Preferences, Extensions and such). This is
how emergency boot CDs (like Apple's Norton's and Disk Tools Pro's) work on
the Mac.
