I recently reformatted my PowerComputing clone drive with 1.6.2 (I have
read 1.6.1 is potentially dangerous) just so that in the future I can
easily update the hard disk drivers that come with the MacOS. Each time a
new OS comes out some new disk driver comes out, but FWB was charging
money for me to upgrade my drivers. So when I updated to 8.0 I took the
risk and did not update HDToolkit and things ran fine. But for 8.5 I
wanted to be sure.

Apple keeps changing its policy on what drives are supported. According
to my Sad Mac, Bombs and other Disasters book (Ted Landau author) wrote
that the Apple drivers would not support most third party supplied hard
drives. But then I read on Ted's MacFixit.com site about updating drivers
under Drive Set-Up 1.6.2 and he mentioned all the new drives that could
be initialized. I wrote him and he pointed out that Apple had changed its
policy, and was now supporting a wider selection of SCSI drives.
