I have been binhexed for years. I dunno why it works, but it does. Theory
tells us that encoding allows us to send 8 bit binary data as 7 bit ascii
text files, and also advises the use of binhex for mac to mac and
appledouble (or, depending on the source, mime or uuencode) for mac to pc.
The problem is that one doesn't know what hardware platform and what
emailer are at the other end. And why should you even need to think about
this? Do you have to worry about the brand of telephone at the other end
when you make a call? Every time I have followed the recommendations of
theory, problems have ensued. So I stick with binhex and everything
proceeds serenely.

Another positive move is to install Stuffit on all the PCs within reach.
Stuffit has long been the champion decoder on the Mac platform and now that
it's available for Windoze, I imagine (I have no direct experience) that it
will do an equally excellent job on PCs.

A good place to start is:

There are some excellent articles on email attachments including apple
single/double.
