One issue with ICQ and AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) is security. All that
conversation is being handled by remote servers belonging to someone else.
Who else may be listening and what backdoors may exist on the software
which will permit a remote user to access or control the client? If you
have a firewall, you will need to allow these apps permission to cross it.

Another issue is that eventually the providers of those services may want
to charge you for it, either actively or via advertising.
