While it's not a cheap solution, and it does much more than what you are
looking for, DAVE 2.1 from Thursby Systems does allow for Windows style
"pop up" messages. It will receive and send these using SMB protocols. As
a bonus, you also get access to Windows shares, printers, and Domain
logins.
