RE: [WinMac] Update Word and Excel Files?

Pat,

I've read the other replies on the list and, though I don't deny most of
what was suggested, I can report that MS Office apps don't open "ALL"
documents created under previous versions. I had a case last summer in
which I had to find an old copy of Excel 2.2 and install it on a 68k Mac in
order to read a collection of Excel 1.5 documents. Neither Excel from
Office 4.2.1 nor Office 98 would recognize these old documents. I also
tried using MacLinkPlus (bundled with MacOS), but it had the same problem.

If you wanted to try a batch conversion of newer files, give MacLinkPlus a
look. It has a drag-and-drop item generically named "Document Converter".
If you duplicate that item and then open it, you can configure it for the
type of output document you want. Then, all documents "dropped" on the
resulting icon are converted to the desired form. I've used it on a limited
basis and it seems to work. The drag-and-drop feature allows it to operate
in a semi-batch mode. You can't drop a entire disk, but could create
document converters for Word 8 & Excel 8, sort your originals by file type,
and work from there.
