Quoting from the August issue of Macworld (visit
<http://www.macworld.com>):

"From Rhapsody, the OS that Apple began to develop after it purchased
Next, Mac OS X will get stability and speed improvements that simply
aren't possible with today's Mac OS...

"Don't let the name Mac OS X mislead you into thinking this is just
another operating system update. Mac OS X isn't like any version of
the Mac OS that's come before. It's a new OS -- but it provides a Mac
interface and compatibility with Mac applications. Even calling it new
is a little misleading -- at its core, it's essentially Rhapsody with
native Mac OS compatibility... features include preemptive
multitasking, protected memory, and a high-performance kernel."

Yes, it does use the Mach kernel. It is not "simply a cleaned up
extension" of OS 8.

My recommendation to people who post is to check their facts, and
provide a source for those facts (unless of course you are passing
along a personal experience). My recommendation to anyone who reads a
post is to make sure that it includes an authoritative source that you
can trust beyond he or she who posts. And remember, that personal
experiences are great, too -- but they can be based on following a
process improperly. Don't make important decisions based purely on one
or two personal experiences either.

Lists like this are great resources, but they can also easily
perpetuate inaccurate information.
