That's probably what's it's doing as I'm using putting in higher rez photos
to go to slides and thus am always having to scale the image down within
PPT but the resolution is there so the slides look good. Most "real"
graphics programs (like Freehand or PageMaker for example) don't mess with
the file that's imported but respect whatever size you have it at.

And your guess it probably right in that PPT is working with the idea of an
on-screen presentation where 72dpi is the norm. Still, it shouldn't do
that!
