[WinMac] Token & Chokin'

        G'day, Ralph!

        Token ring support on the Mac is tricky at best: I have two customers that
are using it by executive fiat.

        If your LAN were ethernet, or fast ethernet, then VPC would be fine. But
with token ring, I recommend grabbing an older PC since you'll probably be
using the PC portion for eMail.

        If you need to hook in the Mac, you can set up an NT box with both
ethernet and token ring NICs; and then connect the Mac's ethernet into the
NT box' ethernet via a crossover cable; then enable packet forwarding. This
will work with both IP and IPX (NetWare) packets; but not with NetBEUI
(which is non-routeable).

        Alternatively, if you have an NT server on your LAN already, just drop in
a quality ethernet NIC and proceed accordingly.

        The key to any successful token ring installation is to WATCH THE
PROTOCOLS! :)

 --------------------

        Also, another "Gotcha" is the physical cabling itself:

        * Category 3 is good for 10 megabits/second (4 megabit token ring,
10Base-T ethernet; and with some trickwork 100Base-T4 fast ethernet);

        * Category 4 is good for 16 megabits/second (16 megabit/second token ring);

        * Category 5 is good for up to 100 megabits/second (100Base-TX fast
ethernet); although some premium cables are rated for up to 350
megabits/second;

        * Category 6 is good for up to ??? (anybody?!)

        Cheers!

necessarily require access to the network from the MacOS, but they use some
Windows-based software which must access the network. Can Virtual PC drive
a PCI-based TokenRing card? If so, does it need to be Apple's card or can I
use any PCI card? The info from Connectix talks extensively about Ethernet
but not TokenRing.

matter if they can't access this directly from the MacOS. Does anyone have
any experience driving this (or a similar) piece of equipment under Virtual
PC? My understanding is that I can connect a JetDirect (ethernet) adapter
to the HP and Virtual PC will do the rest via ethernet?

This connectivity would be a plus, but I primarily want all their computer
services running in one box. If it only works under Virtual PC, then that's
fine - as long as it does work.
