Check out Software.Com's Post.Office if you're wanting a POP/SMTP solution
that will work for Mac or Windows. They have fully functioning demo
version that will work great for up to ten accounts. After that they have
scaled pricing depending on the number of user accounts you need. I
installed it a few months ago and after some intial DNS problems (not
related to Post.Office) it has worked great. It even has a web interface
for setup, configuring and routine maintenance.
