RE: [WinMac] NT/Mac print problems

        Dear Daniel,

This is my fault -- You aren't hard-headed -- I need to simplify my
explanations better!

First off, the LaserWriter 360 shipped with 3 MB soldered in and a 4MB
SIMM. It only will recognize a 4 MB or 16 MB SIMM -- If you put in an 8 MB
SIMM only 4 MB of the SIMM will be recognized; and if you drop in a 32 MB
SIMM only 16 MB of the SIMM will be recognized. [I fell into this trap by
installing a 32 MB SIMM into a LWS360 once: I was embarrassed when I
*carefully* read Apple's TIL article!]

Here's the rub: With a 4 MB SIMM installed in a LaserWriter 360, it will
recognize all 7 MB (3 MB soldered + 4 MB installed). With a 16 MB SIMM
installed, the 3 MB soldered in will be ignored, i.e. only 16 MB will be
reported.

When a 16 MB SIMM was over $400, upgrading the SIMM from 4 MB to 16 MB
required some thought. Now that 16 MB SIMMs are about $10, it's a
no-brainer! :)

 ------

Now, on to your next issue, freeing up your LC575 for more productive work:)

Yes, you can print directly to the LW360 via *both* the LocalTalk *and* the
parallel ports. After all is said and done, you'll do better with a hardware
Ethernet -> LocalTalk bridge... Unless you can dedicate an old Mac (such as
a IIci with an old 40 MB drive ad four 1 MB SIMMs) to use with the
LaserBridge Control Panel.

What you want to do is "uncapture" the LW360 in NT: This will allow the
Macs to print directly to the LW360. Or better yet, shut OFF the Print
Spooler for Macintosh Service (in the Services Control Panel): Click on the
"Stop" button to shut it off; and "Startup..." to disable it on subsequent
boots.

This will allow the Macs to print in their own language; and PC's to print
through the NT Spooler. Since System 7.1, the MacOS has its own built-in
spooler; and in >98% of the cases it works better than going through an NT
spooler. There ARE exceptions, but concentrate on the norm, not the
exception: If you are using a(n) LW360, then most likely you don't really
NEED NT's spooler.

KISS - Keep It Simple, Supervisor! :)

        Cheers!
        Dan
