I have a Supra Express 288 on my G3 Mac and I can dial out with it from
Virtual PC....
BUT
IMHO The way to go is to get VPC working with a "standard modem" and then
add another modem whose PC model matches your Mac modem as closely as
possible. Nevertheless, you will always take a big speed hit because of the
emulation.
I found I had 2 main reasons to browse the Web from inside VPC - (a) Help
Page refs to Web addresses in PC progs - that worked and I could improved
it a bit by setting Internet Explorer to cache recently visited pages etc.
(b) file downloads where the Mac browser would obstinately try and download
a .EXE file directly instead of saving it to disk despite everything I
defined in Netscape's "helpers", prefs. etc. For (b), I now use that trick
of holding down the Option key in Netscape which _always_ gives me the
option to save the file to the Mac disk (pardon me if you know that!)
I had found sending e-mail with attachments to a PC CompuServe account was
a pain from the Mac side - but I recently solved this problem by using
Netscape for these emails instead of Eudora Pro - Netscape's standards for
attachments are recognised by Compuserve.....
No doubt there are other reasons for needing the VPC modem to work directly
but I've been lucky enough so far using these workrounds - HTH
