[WinMac] Re: TCP/IP printing

Printing TCP/IP from a Mac is simple, and often the best solution if your network is large, you have a segmented ATM backbone, or just many IP segments with flaky hubs and switches. Printing IP can also please those grumpy IS managers who insist "AppleTalk is Chatty, IP is much better". Please them (and prove them wrong @ the same time) and use TCP/IP from your Mac. 2 simple ways. First - install LaserWriter 8.5.1 (available from Apple Web site), run the Desktop Printer Utility, choose the LaserWriter 8 printer driver (must be 8.5.1) and create Printer LPR. The next screen choose your PPD and then enter the IP address of the printer you wish to print to. Click on the verify button, if your printer can be seen it will tell you. Then go to file and save the desktop printer to your desktop with any name you wish. You must save or the printer will not be available. This printer will not appear under chooser but is available under the print menu in applications or drag to it on your desktop. It works great. The 2nd option is to purchase "Dave" by Thursby corporation and you can connect to an Mac from NT or NT from a Mac via chooser, (And print too). The only software that needs to be installed is on the Mac. A great option as well.
