We had similar problems with a similar set-up. It appeared that Macs
with a static connections to our NT Resource Server would receive an
AppleTalk broadcast that would hang or in some cases lock up their Mac.
Users who were trying to log in would experience similar problems.

After running a sniffer to rule out broadcasts storms and other network
anomalies, we found that the disk usage and processor usage was in high
80+ percentile.

Our solution (which we just implemented but seems to be working) was to
upgrade DRAM and Disk Storage. I believe we're running now with 1 Gig
of DRAM and 60 Gigs of disk space.
